Programme in Water and Sustainable Development

Research Programme in Water and Sustainable Development

Thematic track modules

After joint introduction weeks in term 1, you follow six modules (term 2-7) based on your personal learning objectives and academic background. These modules are grouped in four closely connected and partly overlapping thematic tracks, based on societal water challenges and build on the available teaching and research expertise within IHE Delft. The modules are regularly adapted to reflect the latest needs and developments. Modules with five or more students registered will be offered. Within a thematic track, you choose a disciplinary profile.

Philosophy of Science and History of Water Wisdom

Module 9 addresses the fundamental question of what science is, and what makes research scientific. It introduces the philosophy of science from a cross-cultural perspective, placing philosophers and their ideas in a historical perspective.

You will critically assess and compare scientific theories and paradigms from different disciplines and study values and beliefs from different cultures. Through these perspectives, you will learn about the value of the multiple ways of knowing, understanding and researching water.

You will also focus on the role of science in societal debates and policy-making. Throughout the module, there is emphasis on research ethics and good practices for fieldwork, experimentation, (digital) technology, and data and referencing, including avoiding plagiarism.

Valorization

The Research MSc programme aims to enable students to apply and create new knowledge that informs solutions and interventions that address water challenges in inclusive and sustainable ways.

The valorisation module’s aim is to guide you in communicating the knowledge you gained in your thesis research. You will create an action plan that includes communication  to make your research results accessible to society and increase societal impact.

The module will strengthen knowledge and skills needed to use the thesis research to address societal challenges. You will communicate this information to audiences including those who are unfamiliar with the scientific approaches you have used in your research project.
